Epidavros is 30 km east of Nafplio, in the Prefecture of Argolida, Peloponnese. It is famous for its ancient theatre, one of the most renowned ancient sites in Greece. It is a place dedicated to culture and spirit, as all the greek tragedies and comedies written by Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides and Aristophanes have been staged here since ancient times.

Epidavros was also a sanctuary for Asclepius, the god of medicine, a sanctuary of equal importance to that of Kos island, visited by those seeking a cure.

Today, it is the theatre that the visitors come for, not the sanctuary. The theatre, that dates back to the 3rd century B.C., is one of the best preserved ancient buildings and houses the Festival of Epidavros every July and August. It has 12,000 seats and the acoustics are so amazing that the audience do not miss a word, even when they are seated in the highest seat.Between the theatre and the sanctuary, there is a museum with interesting exhibits from the ancient site.

The town of ancient Epidavros was situated where the village of Old Epidavros now stands. Old Epidavros is a waterfront settlement with a small harbour, built in a plain full of orange-trees. You can find tourist facilities and some good beaches around.
