Ithaki was the home of Odysseus, Homer's hero that wandered for years before he finally reached his long-lost kingdom and returned to his wife Penelope. Although some archaeologists have identified other islands as ancient Ithaca, today's Ithaki remains the favoured archaeological choice. Still, there is not conclusive evidence as to the location of Odysseus' palace.

Ithaki is a small mountainous island, relatively unspoilt by massive tourism. It is separated from Cephalonia by a channel 2 to 4 kilometres wide. The west coast of the island is steep and almost barren in contrast to the green, gentle shoreline on the east.

The capital and main harbour is Ithaki or Vathi. It's a charming town, with some old mansions, nice cafes and restaurants, and three museums: the archaeological, the nautical and the folklore museum. It's also the safest point to leave your yacht and explore the island.

Three kilometres to the northwest lies the Cave of the Nymphs. Here, according to the myth, Odysseus hid the gifts bestowed upon him by the Phaeacians.

North of the capital and 600 metres above sea level, the Kathara Monastery has a unique view of the island from its bell tower.

The picturesque fishing village of Frikes, about 13 kms from Vathy, is well worth a visit, and the attractive settlement of Kioni, 4 kms from Frikes, is a popular yacht anchorage. There are pebbled coves between these two.

The bay of Polls to the west is the site of another cave (Loizos' cave). This one yielded up sherds on which were carved inscriptions testifying to the worship of Artemis, Hera and Athena.

Ithaki offers lovely beaches for bathing, caves for exploring and uncrowded hamlets where noisy nightlife is unheard of. It's the place for those in search of quiet holidays, and... who knows? Maybe you will long to return to Odysseus' kingdom, too!
