Nafplio, the first capital of Greece after the War of Independence, is one of the prettiest towns in Greece. It is now the capital of the region of Argolida in Peloponese, and a main port which offers all kinds of facilities. It consists of the new and the old parts of the city.

The new part is of no special interest, in contrast to the old one, which is a gem.It has many venetian buildings, 18th and 19th century neoclassical mansions with balconies full of bougainvillae and flowers, narrow cobbled streets and, most interesting, three fortresses: the wonderfully preserved Venetian citadel of Palamidi, the smaller fortress of Akronafplia, and the tiny fortress of Bourtzi on an islet east of the old town.

The Palamidi offers a view to the Argolic Gulf which will take your breath away as soon as you have caught it, having climbed the 857 steps that lead there. There's no need to panic or miss the wonderful sight, as there's an asphalt road, too, leading to the other side of the castle and you can always take a taxi.

For more sightseeing, there is an archaeological, a popular art and a military museum. When you get tired of strolling, tavernas with delicious food will help you gather your strength back, and a drink in one of the numerous bars will make the evening ecxiting!

Many beaches are found near Nafplio, some of which are: Karathona, Asini, Tolo, Drapano and Plaka.
